Duke of York Square Restaurant Case Study
Duke of York Square Restaurant is an award-winning circular building in Chelsea, designed by Nex Architecture as the final element of the area’s redevelopment. WestWood’s PMMA waterproofing systems were specified to deliver a robust, hardwearing and visually bespoke solution across the roof garden, steps and roof areas.
Maximising Resilience
Wecryl 230 was selected to waterproof several areas, including the public roof garden, the concrete steps leading up to this space, a roof area housing M&E equipment, and a small lift core roof. This high grade PMMA-based resin is cold applied with a fleece reinforcement resulting in a durable waterproofing membrane that fully bonds to the substrate, is highly flexible and permanently weather resistant.
As timber decking was going to be installed over the steps, measures were put in place to provide extra protection. This saw the treads overlaid with Wecryl 333, a trowel applied wearing layer with a quartz sand topping. This was followed by the application of the Wecryl 488 sealer coat providing a hardwearing skid-inhibiting finish.
Maximising Resilience
As some of the steps incorporated threaded bars which penetrated the waterproofing membrane, Weseal 815 Fibre Putty was used to waterproof this detail. Highly flexible,
this fibre-filled waterproofing product is ideal for small, geometrically complex details.
Wecryl 333 was also used as added protection for the small lift core roof followed by the application of Wecryl 488 in two colours – lead grey and white. This layer was then topped with deco chips to provide an aesthetic finish.
Durable waterproofing system
Wecryl 230 was used to waterproof the public roof garden, steps, M&E roof area and lift core roof, creating a fully bonded, flexible and permanently weather-resistant membrane.
Hardwearing anti-slip finish
The stair treads were overlaid with Wecryl 333 and finished with Wecryl 488 sealer coat to provide extra protection and a skid-inhibiting surface beneath the timber decking.
Ideal for complex detailing
Weseal 815 Fibre Putty was used around threaded bars and other awkward details, helping waterproof small and geometrically complex areas effectively.
Fast curing for busy sites
WestWood’s Wecryl products cure rapidly and can be adjusted from five to 45 minutes, helping contractors work efficiently around site constraints, curved walls and other trades.
Overcoming Complex Challenges
The project presented various challenges, including the need to navigate drainage grooves along the stairs, the building’s curved walls, constrained working areas, and other tradespeople. These were overcome thanks to skilled workmanship, stringent planning, and the quality of WestWood’s PMMA products.
All Wecryl products cure rapidly and can adapt to a wide temperature and humidity range. The two-component 2K system, powered by a peroxide catalyst, enables contractors to vary cure times from five to 45 minutes, ensuring a quick turnaround on busy construction sites.
Flame-free and easy to apply, the Wecryl liquid system allows complex details to be effortlessly waterproofed without the need for terminations or mechanical fixings.
