Robust Refurbishment Solution

The metal roof of Skerne Park Primary School was failing. Inadequate maintenance had resulted in significant weathering and corrosion of the steel core, leaving the structure vulnerable. Rather than opt for full replacement, the client sought a robust refurbishment solution that would restore the roof’s performance and extend its serviceable life.

Scope Of Works

WestWood’s Wecryl 230 PMMA-based resin was selected as the waterproofing system and colour matched to the goose grey colour of the existing roof to preserve its appearance. Prior to installation, adhesion testing, structural assessment and wind load calculations were completed to ensure suitability.

The system was installed by WestWood-approved contractor Everlast, which employs several operatives that hold WestWood’s black card – its highest accreditation for skill and workmanship. The works required the full waterproofing of the roof structure as well as upstands and intricate detailing around plant and vents.

Weekly visits from WestWood’s technical manager, supported by open-book reporting, ensured strong quality control and that any potential issues were addressed quickly.

Key Constraints

The project had to navigate winter working conditions and the need to operate within a live school environment. As Wecryl 230 is solvent-free and cold applied it was well suited to both challenges, eliminating the need for hot works on site, minimising disruption and enhancing safety for staff and pupils. The fast-curing properties of PMMA kept the programme on track despite the difficult weather conditions.
